- Always set your alarm before leaving your home even if you are only going to the corner store. This will protect your home from burglary and your pets and property in case of a fire.
- Protect your doors. Make sure your doors, including jambs and hinges are sturdy.
 - Use a dead bolt lock. A double cylinder dead bolt lock is one of the most secure types of locks. This is particularly useful in a door with windows as it requires a key to be used inside and out.
- Use a locking bar on a sliding glass door. This will prevent entry even if the door is unlocked.
- Windows are a burglar's second choice for entry. Be sure to close and lock all accessible windows. Never leave a ladder where an intruder can make use of it.
 - Do not leave your shades or draperies closed during the day when you are out. Drawn window coverings are a solid clue that no one is at home.
- Install sensor lights which will reveal an intruder's presence outside your dwelling.
- Create some source of noise in the home before you leave (an empty house is silent). For example, place a radio with the volume turned low, at a front window.
- Leave one or two inexpensive toys or garden tools scattered about. Do not leave unlocked bicycles outside (they are a clue to the carelessness of the homeowners, which may extend to other precautions they neglect to take as well).
- Always close and lock garage doors before you drive away. An empty garage is a strong sign of an empty house.
- Never leave a note on the door for anyone explaining that you are out for lunch, have gone shopping, etc. This advertises the fact that you are not at home.
- Never leave valuable furs, clothing, rugs, etc. on a clothesline unless you are there to watch them. This is dangling bait for a thief.
 - In winter, never leave foot or tire tracks in the snow that only show people leaving. Walk or drive the car back and forth, to indicate arrival as well as departure.
- Be careful with your keys! Taking good care of your keys is as important as having effective locks. Change lock cylinders when you move into a new home. You never know how many people have keys to the old one.
- Be careful who you trust with your keys. No lock will protect you if a burglar has your key.
- Never leave your keys in the door, even if you will be gone for a moment.
- The mailbox is not a safe place for your key.
- Leaving the key over a doorjamb is not wise.
